Full Version: Puck for the horn

Hi all y'all,
I am getting tired of having my horn go off at inopportune moments because I have nudged the butterfly on the steering wheel by mistake. Ahh, a smooth sharp left turn with great savor faire an... blaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh, dammit.

So I want to be a cool kid and have a puck button. But not at that price! (insert eye watering emoji) And of course I make everything myself anyway. So could someone give me the OD and ID and height in and out? I can work it out from there. Might go with aluminum but also might go with ebony or rosewood from scraps that I have. Thanks so much. If necessary, I can bring calipers to RRC, but online would be better. That way I won't lose the scrap of paper I have them written on.

I know that there is a 3D printer file but I don't think that I could unravel it to get the measurements.

Thanks so much.

4” ID at the base. The top tapers in a bit so about 3 1/2 where the chrome ring sits.

I had to make up my dimensions on that file anyway. I have been meaning to go back and massage it a little, try to replicate some of the details like the ring etc... Is that decreasing diameter linear or just in a portion of the puck?

That said, I no longer accidently hit my horn. And I can see my dash better, although the fog lights button is a little bright.

If you can get me the base OD and the inner ID that would be grand. The depth of the hole would help a lot too. Thanks folks for all the great help this time and lots of others.

You can get a lot of the dimensions from your batwing.
emerygt350
I can find the dimensions I used tomorrow morning. I can send you the cad file but you probably don't need all that.

I plan to do that, but would rather have some help as well. My experience with measure twice cut once has been hit and miss at times.

I built one with 914 rubber plastic housing ,the biggest cost is the chrome trim ,found the leather insert @ a fair price , but really not that cheap but result was what I wanted ,cheers.

Nice work! Looks like 914 Rubber isn’t offering that part anymore. That is what I am aiming to make. Thanks.

The 914rubber part wasn’t very good.

Mine worked great! You had to treat it like an upholstery job. The leather insert doesn’t like being just placed in there with hopes it will stay.

agree.gif yes it wasn't great ,the one I got was strangely a grey/black colour so I repainted it satin black , it was also a bit out of shape but when clipped on seem to look better .
After that pic was taken I packed out the leather with a piece of felt underneath and it improve the look more ,cheers.

Mine keeps you from hitting the horn and still looks better than the bat wing. Which is waiting in the bat cave for when I would like to hit my horn at random moments.

Hi Worn, Mark from Merrimac. I need a horn puck just to cover the steering shaft nut...No logo, no chrome, no horn. I'll buy one of your early prototypes. Mark

Thanks Mark. I will keep you in mind when I poke around in the exotic wood stockpile.

My dimensions at the base are 100mm OD 95mm ID and I have a 19mm depth cavity where I mount the metal base for the horn mechanism. The fit and clearances are all good.

nice. I am learning how to use lattice2 in freecad, that picture will really help recreate the ribs on the side of the puck.

Nice. I like the pen and ink type sketch.

Here is my new draft... I will export it to a stl and get it up on the thingiverse after I do a draft print.

I was wondering if a groove in the top would allow to fit a thin piece of polished aluminum for a more original look. I groove like 6MM wide.

That would be another way of doing it. I was going to use spray chrome on that ring. I think it might be pretty difficult to find the right kind of chrome piece to make it look good. I wish I could figure out how to print a leather texture on that portion and then I would reverse that Porsche emblem so it was a cavity rather than standing proud.
Ishley
I’d cut the circle on a bandsaw and do the inside with a hole saw. Grind it to fit perfectly and then polish it with polishing compound to get it to a chrome finish.

This stuff is black magic. Makes me have a ton more respect for the people that make those cgi movies like Shrek.

I contacted a friend of mine who does printing… and he ran the first model you published. He said he stopped and changed the wire to silver when it got to the logo portion.

I haven’t physically seen it yet… but I thought you’d be interested in this variation.

emerygt350
That is really nice. I should update the files with the new one. I have been running into issues on my machine. Research students damaged the membrane on the uv printer ....

Here is my attempt at leather texture... Now to see how it transfers to a 3dprint...

This is a real early 911 horn button on my 6. To get it to look like this, you need the good leather and some padding behind it. Fully restored on chrome and plastic by PMB

but to get it for nothing on a 3d printer all you need is this!

After I run a test print I will put it up on thingiverse..

Man, that was a learning experience.
Looks like I distorted the Porsche emblem so it needs some more tweaking...

That picture gives me a good idea of the diameter compared to the wheel. I thought mine was a little narrow but I looks like there is a visible edge on the wheel under the puck.

Worn has an actual piece he did dimensioning off..

Ya I polished my og ring, shiny brass..

Yes, it needs a bit of room so it can function as a horn button. It’s doing the same thing as a batwing and moving a bit to make contact for the horn to work

I have uploaded the most recent version. I have been having issues printing it so I haven't been able to test fitment but I figured uploading the stl wouldn't hurt.
