If I pass the certs I will clear a path to early retirement from my day job and utilize the certs to earn some serious money anywhere in the country.

I hope to be able to sell off the remainder of my inventory at a great value and allow people to continue to convert these cars on a budget

Well DAMN!

I MAY need a dry sump tank for my LGX swap.

I KNOW who's tank I would want!

If I told my Wife (who I LOVE) that I want to by a tank for a mod for an engine I DO NOT have yet and am not completely sure will work...

She's beat me like a red-headed stepchild!

Yep, would NOT be a GOOD day!

I would have thought you were one of the critters who determined who could be a "certified welder".

I'm guessing you could "write the book, prepare the test questions".

I'd LOVE to see you qualification results...

I'd bet that you'll "goose egg" it.

100%! ninja.gif

I have been professionally involved in welding for 30 years now either doing it as a certified welder or teaching welding. I am currently trying to pass my CWI tests and did my first big one yesterday and won’t know the results for as much as 20 weeks from now . Attached is the pass rate for these tests which are considered my industry’s equivalent to exams given to lawyers, or doctors in their industry. Many of the folks doing this are NDE experts and engineers which most of them also complained yesterday about the difficulty.Click to view attachment

My first question would be "Was it hard for you?"...

I'd bet it was not and you may have seen questions that you would have worded differently as the question itself was ambiguous.

I am an ASE double master (which doesn't mean SHIT!) but I took the L1 advanced technician test the very first time it was made available.

That first test had a 90% failure rate...

I hit a 98!

They "dumbed down" the test after that...

It's NOT the same!
I believe the welding CWI test is very hard!
Harder than any ASE bullshit!

I'm BEST at spotting APEX masters...

A master that other masters turn too...

If you "find the Wizard FIRST" everything after will show you how lucky you were!

I am a welding Newbie...
I would love the time to play around with my welders for a year, get semi-comfortable, THEN talk you into teaching me how YOU would tig the metal flares on my car.

This would require a full-on car hauler trip to you, car on rotisserie, lots of money, and a cattle prod I'd provide for attitude adjustment!

Was the test hard?

Lol love your posts. Yes hands down the hardest test I have ever done. It is written to mix you up and has nothing to do with knowledge but the ability to navigate poorly worded and confusing questions and then you search for the answers in the fake code book. It is really hard in my opinion.

Maybe I will make it your way some day and do a one on one training

See, I knew what your answer would be.

Mostly BS with little meat and you automatically saw through it...

I'd bet you thought "Shit, I could have created a better test for actual real-life welding".

It was HARD but not for the RIGHT reasons...

I had you pegged for an "enthusiast" technician and GOD-LIKE Aero-space quailty welder in the first few posts I had with you...

I can spot APEX better than anyone I know!

When you posted multiple years of aero welding my reply was my shortest post yet.

"Explains Much!"

You started under other Uber Master's at the pinnacle of structural welding.
You were DOOMED to it from the start...

I got lucky (or cursed!) too.

Had multiple apex masters early in my career.

I'd love to have you down!

I wouldn't choose to come here in the "High Summer" although my shop does have central HVAC. I'm pretty busy then as well.

Mid-winter here will feel like early fall to you...

@mb911

How much would you charge me to teach me to TIG weld? I have been doing OXY/Acetylene since I was a pre-teen. I learned stick in high school. I know how to MIG weld. So I know the basics. I even have a TIG machine (*Hobart TIGMate).

Oh man not sure. Gotta think about that. A workshop for the local guys would be ideal

I'm local to Clay.

I've got a Prime Weld 225, cooler system, some extra stuff, Mig 180.
Basically new. I never gotten bottles...

I just don't have the time...

Maybe 5 or six of us for a class, and have Ben fly in and teach it??? Kinda like Dr. Evil's transmission clinics?

That would be the way to do it for sure
technicalninja
I'm in if it's a mid-winter thing.

My shop is big enough to host a class.

So, the "Building" could be free (and HEATED!) ninja.gif

This IS the NINJA way!

Least commute for the lazy Ninja...

Mid December would be ideal for me if we can put this together. I would talk to DR evil to see how he charged, hotel, flight, etc

Email sent. Thanks Ben for your fine work.
technicalninja
Now, you DO realize that I just "snaked" my way into getting you to come to me...

Negating the need for a bullshit 1100-mile run, with a full sided race trailer (which I don't have a "friend" yet with one) with a stripped ass car mounted to a decent rotisserie.

The logistics of that mean hard mounting the rot to the trailer...

I do a GOOD job of hosting...

Maybe make it an annual and by the next "Go around" I should be ready for the flares.

I bet LOTS of folks would show up for the full-on flare installation.

I just hit regret...

One of the heavies on here was selling a new set of good ones for 1k

I was FREAKING tempted! devil.gif
They were NICE!

Had I been smart and snatched those puppies up It COULD have been this year!!!

Bad NINJA! BAD, BAD NINJA! ninja.gif

The silver 75 I have will require a piss poor overspray and the original paint removed.
I expect the underlying metal will be as NOS as you have EVER encountered.
The factory paint inside the fenders is near perfect and still glossy in many places.
It COULD be kept in "survivor" status.
Thank God it's not special at all...

This car will not require much prep...

I also have a Bend Pak twisted arm 2 post lift that leaves the fender wells completely accessible!

Nicer to learn upright!

Should have bought those flares...

technicalninja
Had yet another thought!

Mind works slower now sadly...

I have SACRIFICIAL carcasses that are DESTINED to be scrapped.

I have "The Pile of Junk" that Thomas Edison referenced.

Lots of "try it out opportunities" for practice for ALL of the attendees.

I don't give a "fat rat's ass" about the cars...

All can be made to roll.

Maybe someone will need a chunk!

The annual MB911/Ninja bash where everyone leaves MUCH smarter, slightly singed with debris from a couple of trashed cars that they "vultured".

Someone's gonna have to bring the beer!

I've got decent air too!

Edit: Might also be able to include a "fireworks display".
Will have to play that one by ear...

Napasteve made a real good choice!

But DAMN, they're selling...

725 is cheap for most of the "bespoke shit" that is needed to stick a 6 in a 914...

We SHOULD start another thread removing interest/traffic from his for-sale thread thus increasing the Ninja's chances to purchase said items...

I will host such an Event. I don't have to (or want to) manage all of it and if someone else would like a "seat at the table" lets talk!

I've got things to concentrate on as well.
I've got 31 cars to manage. 2 shops, 2 1k storage buildings.
Most are projects/organ doner carcasses (two 914s!)

Moms headed for assisted living and I'm the "Head Honcho/Grim Reaper".
I'd trade that crap off in a heartbeat...

Going through my dad's stuff has been taxing...
The dumpster out back has been FULL at each dumping.
"Downsizing" is an UNDERSTATEMENT!

I will dabble but I will never again invest $20,000 plus in materials to sit on the shelf for years. My current run of filter consoles have been on the shelf for 3.5 years now. Down to about 20 ish left and I will for sure never do that again.

Shift rods, oil cooler mods, maybe FE mounts, engine sheet metal have the lowest costs on them so they will likely remain.

What I will do for some of the other products is take names of people interested in that product and then once I get to a certain number of committed folks with money down I will do a run of something.

Both the car and the tanks are beautiful, gem like...

Glad one of those tanks is MINE!

The wild part is that I don't even need it yet...

I might need one down the road, so I went ahead and bought it!

I'm guessing I will always be able to get my money back out if I don't.

Without a doubt. When I was making exhaust when I announced that was it they sold better than they had when I didn’t announce that was it. I think I will keep one for myself for another project someday.
mepstein
I’m getting one. I’m betting 10 years from now, it will be the gold standard.
Maybe a young guy will buy the business from Ben and make them in the future but I’ll keep mine for the next project.
I had an extra set of his heat exchangers that I regret selling …
914Sixer
Just paid for mine.
mb911
4 tank setups are going out today. Sheet metal should be done late next week. Heading out of town for 5 days then back at it. I have 5 more tanks to make for folks. Stay tuned
mb911
Well I have all but one sold and one pending payment.I will likely keep that for myself for some day If I build another car. Tanks will be NLA at this point unless there are a group of you wanting them then I will do a group buy. I am not interested in inventory anymore unless items sell. Maybe once the economy jumps back up and -6 engines come down in prices?
mepstein
“-6 engines come down in prices?“

Bite your tongue. biggrin.gif

In all seriousness, I don’t think they will. Parts and labor is only getting more expensive. Not just the engine parts themselves but all the components that go into building an engine. Shop space, machining, freight, materials, etc.

Probably but I hope someday to see a little more disposable income for those folks wanting to build a 914-6. This seems the unfortunate end to what I consider one of the best -6 products out there. The only one with dual baffling to remove air from the oil
Rob914
Ben, I was on the fence about taking advantage of this amazing deal and I'm local too so no shipping required. I knew that I will never have an opportunity like this again but it is a want much more than a need. I'm glad that you were able to sell these quickly and now we both off the fence. Best wishes on implementing what lies ahead.
ClayPerrine
Do you have a set of just the side tins for a six conversion?

technicalninja
I received my tank a few days ago.

Super NICE!

The saddest thing about Ben's work is by the time you have it installed in the car the welds are hidden and cannot be easily seen!

I'm a HUGE believer in ceramic coating for exhaust systems.
Makes them live far longer IMO, less heat into the chassis, and other benefits.

When I saw his "robot like" perfect exhaust welds it was the VERY first time I've ever wondered if they make CLEAR ceramic coating.

I want the improvements from the coating, but I'd prefer his welds be visible...

Thanks Ben!
mepstein
Cerikote makes a clear. Actually, a half dozen different clears.
Ben once told me he makes the tanks from a high grade aluminum. They should hold up without a coating. But he can say more about it than me.
mb911

Bare and you have to trim and fit as always. They have a light coat of oil on them

Aside from a few folks everything has shipped. I will finish the remaining tanks over the next week or so
