Maybe Marty can weigh in on this. The 3.0 liter twin turbo motor in my Macan GTS is so freaking amazing, I wonder if it would fit in a 914? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

Anything will fit. All it takes is money.
Having said that, there are a few engines out there i'm still ogling. But my targets are all air-cooled. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

I looked into this and went so far as separating the starter ring gear from a Macan flywheel. Talked with Kennedy about an adapter. The issue is you need to convert the engine to dry sump as the Macan sump is quite deep. I even talked with Marty about his set up.
As @SirAndy points out, it's doable, but I opted for something simpler... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif) If you decide to go this way, let me know. I have a ring gear I don't need. |

Only 3) things needed; Torch, Hammer, Machine shop (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
The h2o cooled Macan, Cayenne engines have great dry sump oiling systems, however the system is internally placed in the 'Pan. This creates a very deep and low hanging oil pan...if you plan to build an 'Offroad 914 jacked up >>you will probably not scrape the oil pan, it is approx 9" lower than the centerline of crankshaft. Custom cnc machined aluminum low-profile oil-pan, combined with an external dry sump pump is the solution. Also the requirement for a cnc aluminum adapter plate for use with a manual transaxle, as these engines do not resemble a standard VW/ or Porsche bolt pattern for direct interfit. The OE crank trigger signals are located back in the starter-ring area...so to simplify your ecu management > a new trigger should be adapted to the front of the crank area. Front mounted external dry-sump pump & custom dry sump pan, front crank trigger wheel, are the answer. Note the centerline distance of the crank pulley-to-bottom of pan, it's "911/ 9146 like" with ample ground clearance. |

Aluminum adapter plate is approx 1" thick, which will move your (choice of) transaxle rearwards by 1".
The wide 'V design of ghe v6/ v8 engine will clear the 914 unibody, and the trailing arm mounting points. The large 'Wilson intake plenum obviously does NOT fit under the 914 grill, but the OE plastic intake manifold will clear. |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) Rob, I know exactly what you mean. We are big fans of the Cayenne S motor (not the 6 cylinder or twin turbo Cayenne motors). Have thought about what it would take to put one in the '72 914. Then realized quickly it's not an easy or really reasonable swap. Let someone else do it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Also big fan of the 32 valve quad cam 928 motors starting in 1985+. As you know, a 928 (16 valve motor) has been swapped into a 914. Our solution is going to be trying to put it in a different vehicle. So, great motors, just find a different car to swap into?? |

I didn’t realize my oil pan was so low. My attraction is how quickly it moves a 4000# SUV even without Sport Mode engaged. It is very quick for an SUV. Been driving it for a year + and I am very entertained. Plus at home maintenance is very doable.
Not me. I’ll stick with my 3.2 Carrera motor. I’m just sick of hearing about another blah blah Suburu swap. Yuck! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/barf.gif) |

There is a thread on Rennlist about oil starvation on the 32v 928 engines used in competition. I've watched a video there as well; a small camera was installed internally in the valve cover to record the oil accumulation during track use. Probably need to search the 928 forum at Renn for a look see. Thanks for sharing with us. Since ours will be a street driven vehicle and not an endurance race car, we will remember to keep the RPMs under 6k (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) . (at least most of the time) |

What a project, one that's hard to describe with mere words!! Rob, we know what you mean. Our attraction with our Cayenne S is how it moves and handles for a maybe 6,000 pound truck with big tires (originally was 5,000 pounds, but we added multiple skid plates, rock sliders, tow hitch/package, rack, winch, etc). |
