It will take me a long time to get 1,000 miles on the new engine. How soon can I change it?

Also, any problems with running synthetic oil?

This is from https://lnengineering.com/oil/:

How should I break in my new or rebuilt engine?

If you have questions on how you should break in an engine and proper break in procedure beyond the guides we provide specifially for air-cooled and water-cooled Porsche engines, we recommend reading the following articles about the subject:

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

AERA Engine Professional “How to Break In a Rebuilt Engine”
When can I switch to a synthetic oil on my new or rebuilt engine?

For break in we recommend at at most 200-400 miles on a break-in oil like Driven BR or 607-7177 API CI-4 15w40 engine oil. This would be followed by the use of an intermediate conventional oil such as Driven HR or the aforementioned 607-7177 oil for the next 3,000 to 5,000 miles, before switching to a semi- or full-synthetic oil. For our Porsche customers, we recommend running Driven BR for the first 20-30 minutes to allow for camshaft/lifter/rocker break-in, to be immediately followed by an oil change to one of our recommended intermediate oils.

For Porsche models, once the engine has been completely broken in and the piston rings are fully seated, we recommend Driven DT50 (15w50) for aircooled engines. For watercooled engines, Driven DT40 (5w40) is recommended in place of a Porsche A40 approved oil. Porsche engines with direct injection should use Driven DI40 in place of a Porsche C40 approved oil.

So, to answer your question: 20 - 30 minutes.

When we run a fresh engine in the stand. It gets about 20-30 minutes of run time to heat cycle the engine and then put in the car. Engine oil is changed for each new engine.
We only run Dino oil in air cooled engines. Usually Castrol GTX classic.

Too long ,as mentioned, 500 miles is plenty if the motor driven to "run in specs" which means limited idling and constant load changes on the engine to assist the rings to "bed in " ,avoid constant high RPM .
Engine tune is real important BERORE running after a rebuild ,timing and fuel if wrong can do a fair amount of damage in a very short time...seen it .
Not a fan of synthetic oil used in old design engines, quality dino full zinc 20/50 has served me well in T1 and T4 motors ,cheers.
