How miserable is it to weld in a new battery tray without dropping the motor? My car is far from a clean specimen so I'm not worried about it not being perfect. Probably asked and answered but I haven't seen it in my search

I was in the hole where the engine goes when I welded mine. You'd be doing it up side down I guess. I'd pull the engine lid to get more room and I'd add a light to the engine bay to help get the wire in the right place. Cover everything up. I drilled 3/8" holes and did rosebuds to hold it in, once ground down they look like big spot welds. Good luck

Between making the job harder, not getting it right, and collateral damage, I recommend dropping the engine.
