***Go to the end for the UPDATE***
Hi all you teeners My car's idle sticks at 2k if I turn it off and start it immediately it goes back to 950. Looking for a vendor to fix this - I of course rebuilt it when the engine was out. I am sure all was done correctly (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) I believe that the wrong springs may have been in the rebuild kit. Is there a vendor that rebuilds and calibrates these? Thank you Teeners! CTC911CTC |

Wrong springs will not make a dizzy sticky and hold at a given rpm.
Check your sliding advance plate within the dizzy. Check your carb linkage |

Thank you Teeners! CTC911CTC Which distributor do you have? Marelli or Bosch? I sent our Marelli S112BX distributor to Ed Fall Vintage Werks LLC . He tested and sent me a curve mapping. He can also make adjustments to the advance progression as needed. |

I might first watch the timing marks and see if they correspond (advancing) with the engine speed.
Also, double check you carb synch |

Second vote for Bill at SparxWerks. He has done two distributors for me so far. His work is excellent.
I had the same symptoms you describe, was told it was the distributor sticking, only to find out later that there was a kink in the accelerator cable. Not saying that is the cause of your problem, but something to put on the list to check. |

Wrong springs will not make a dizzy sticky and hold at a given rpm. Check your sliding advance plate within the dizzy. Check your carb linkage (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) it can only be the advance weights not returning ,wrong springs will only effect when and how the advance comes in, my Marelli was I bit gummed up so give it a good clean and fine ,these are very simple units and robust ,but I remember Clay mentioned they can hang up on the advance stops ,hopefully he will chime in as appears he knew their issues well ,cheers and good luck . |

By stock I assume you are talking about a Marelli Distributor ? ditch that and get a Bosch unit

I have almost 3 of these Marelli units. One was working fine in my car until
engine changes required a bosch S type curve, so they are sitting. You can check them out and see how the weights move/feel, and test install. I have to assume that there is something sticky preventing free movement of the weights. This is very low tech. Mark S. |

looks like someone has cornered the market for the 914-4 distros! What a collection, and why are they on the ground - perhaps hallowed ground?
Wait, those are all 6's????!!!! |

Soooooooooooo
I got this car running - and mechanically it is sound, but I had a great deal of trouble with the carbs and bought a new set - WHICH - I could never get set completely correct, etc. Hard to start Hard to set idle Looked at timing a few times - all good idle and 6K THEN!!!!!! The throttle started to stick at 2K. If I turned the ignition off for a second and then turned it back on the car would settle back at ~1K HHHHHMMMMMmmmmmm I decided to check the distro, here are the old and new springs When I did the rebuild (simplest mechanical device ever) there are just a few parts. The weights are good and the springs seemed OK, HOWEVER....... The springs I received from the rebuild kit (on the right in the picture) were different - I called them and verified that I received the correct springs........hhhmmm Yesterday I put in the old springs (on the left, in very good shape) and they held the weights at rest under tension where the new springs from the kit had a bit of slack in the weights......double HHHhhhhmmmm Put the distro back in the hole, buttoned it up turned the key AND! The car started instantly, and settled at an idle WHILE cold. This would not happen prior. Reset the timing at idle and the RPMs rose to 2K. I backed off the idles screws - slowly and watched the car settle at 980ish. Wow. Drove the car and the power curve is much better, less spitting THOUGH i will need to go through the least-lean method again, running rich but not too rich, Also, on a down shift too much fuel - had a BIG-BANG in the muffler.....YOW Moral of the story - vendors have new employees who do things wrong and do not realize it. Check the product if it looks wrong. I believe all of my carb chasing was a product of this situation where the timing floated a few degrees at low RPMS,,,,,,,, Will update when I do the least-lean |
