First time post for me. I had the bright idea to replace the entire (original) brake system on my ‘74 914. This required removal and replacement of the emergency brake cables. I’m stuck how to navigate the new cable through the bracket that acts as a stop for the cable ferrule as it routes to the caliper. The end of the cable that attaches to the caliper won’t pass through the bracket, and i can’t remove the adjusting bolts from the cable to pass it through the other direction (rear to front). I’m stumped. I even tried AI which made me crazy. I apologize in advance if there’s thread addressing this but I’ll be damned if I can find it. Do I have the wrong cable? Am I an idiot? Be kind.

If I understand your problem
The cables are inserted from the engine firewall side.

Thanks. Is the clevis end of the cable supposed to pass through the retaining bracket on the way to the caliper? Maybe that’s my problem. The clevis is too big to pass through the bracket. Maybe I have a bad replacement part that’s not to specs?

I replaced the brake cables recently, and I think I know what issue you are facing. In my case, the caliper end of the after-market cable was not shaped the same as the original cable, and was too large to fit through the opening in the bracket. I ended up using my bench grinder to shape the cable ends to more closely match the originals (more rounded instead of rectangular) to make them fit through the opening.

I'll be heading out to do some work on the 914 soon, and will take some photos to post here if that helps.

It turns out I had already taken a photo of the old and new. As you can see, the shape of the new aftermarket cable end is much larger than the original cable, preventing it from fitting through the opening.

You need to file/grind down the new cable end to have it more closely match the original.

I got the same cable that doesn't fit until you grind the edge down to fit. It also has 16mm adjustment nuts unlike the original 17mm. Why can't our replacement parts meet original specifications?
