How do I extract the ignition switch on my '73 914? I've got the steering wheel off and the four thin screws removed from the switch cluster. It seems reluctant to move toward me. It's beginning to seem like the wiring harness has hardened in place. I replaced the battery cable to the starter and I can't straighten it out the old one.

I did this very recently. The Pelican instructions linked above were an excellent guide.

You do need to disconnect the two electrical connectors behind before being able to pull out the turn signal switch. I assume you took the kneepad off (as per the Pelican instructions), otherwise you won't have access. Once the connectors are off, you should be able to slide the turn signal switch out. Careful, it will be hanging by the windshield washer hoses at that point.

Even loosening the bolt underneath, I was not able to pull my steering column housing forward as indicated in the Pelican instrucions - was good and stuck, or something else I didn't find was holding it back. I was able to unplug and replug the switch contact connector witout moving the housing, it was a bit difficult but doable with some patience. The rest is a piece of cake.
