I've read up on different posts and I am familiar with how to make adjustments to my shifter linkage. My question is around pressure/tension to shift out of first gear.
I'm to the point where I've adjusted linkage to get into each of the gears easily. Originally had an issue with not getting to first (kept popping out of gear). And all the gears but first shift back to neutral with minimal pressure except for first. First gear takes quite a bit of pressure to get back to neutral. Reverse is similar to all the other gears. All other gears give more of a "click" back to neutral where as 1st gear is more of a "thunk" with more pressure to get back. I have no frame of reference since my shift linkage was off when I bought the car. Should first gear back to neutral feel similar to the other gears or is what I described normal? I've already confirmed that the transmission is at the appropriate locations for each of the gears. And should mention that without the linkage attached I could put the transmission into any gear easily. In the meantime, I'm going to try to make slight tweaks to the shifter linkage to see if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance. |

We need details
Stock? Or modified? Year? Model, Type of transmission shift, tail or side (if you do not know, does the shift linkage go all the way to the back of the car or just to the middle of the transmission? |

If it is the 75 in your screen name it is a side shift. Hard in and out of first, I’d be getting my tools to adjust my clutch. Here is a link to some good info, at the end is an adjustment procedure :

Is this an option: https://tangerineracing.com/shop/ols/produc...-alignment-tool
I recently purchased one of these but have yet to try it out. My 2056 is shifting well |

As for the details I left out. I’m doing this on my ‘75 that’s stock with an updated clutch (per paper work 6 spring clutch)
I actually think I got it figured out. I spent more time this afternoon adjusting and 1st/Reverse feel almost identical to the other gears. I made another pass with the main adjustment with it in neutral and over towards 4th/5th gears. And made sure to turn the linkage as much as it would go. Then I did finer tuning with the vertical position of the shifter centered in neutral. Doing this reduced the pressure/tension I was trying to describe earlier. I was able to take it for a spin around the neighborhood and 1st - 3rd were spot on. Might need to fine tune more as I get use to driving this car. |

First should be a bit more pressure, but not much, there is a spring should be pushing it towards neutral (to the right), so you “miss” reverse, as soon as it slides out of gear it should pop over to the 2-3 plane…

Every part of the shifter and the rod to the gearbox needs to be up to spec otherwise it won't come together with this somewhat flawed system. Cheers. |

Thanks for the additional input, I've think I got it where I want it. I've only been selecting 1st gear once I've come to a stop. Otherwise I stay in 2nd gear.
