I was working on the ole 914 this weekend, getting ready for the front sway bar install, and found the boots on my steering rack were smoked. I went to order new boots and the standard boots on the websites didn't look like what was on my car.

I think the car already has Turbo Tie Rods on it. I wanted to put this out to you guys to see what you guys think. Are these Turbo Tie Rods?

Excellent! I thought so. Does anyone know if I can replace the boots without having to have the car realigned? I feel like I can pop the tie rod off and unscrew the whole arm from the rack without adjusting the length. Am I dreaming?

Get Porsche brand boots. The URO ones are trash.

Sierra Madre has them, roughly 34.00 each. The 'OEM Quality' ones are 17.00 each. I sprung for the Porsche ones at the advice of @mepstin.

The lesser quality ones tear quickly.

Hey @jim_hoyland - the boots arrived today. I am not 100% sure these match exactly what is on my car today. They are 100% what comes today with a new turbo tie rod kit if you get the Porsche part number, but know that they may be different from what you may have. YMMV.

I will let you know how they fit.

*edit:
My curiosity got the better of me, they are in fact the same as what was on my car. They looked different because of the horrible shape of the ones on the car. I removed one of the originals and placed them side by side. The new ones are thicker. The new boots did not come with replacement spring retainers. Looks like I am missing at least one of the small ones.

Sorry for the confusion.

Hello! You will all be happy to know that the 930 steering rack bellows work perfectly with the 914 rack and turbo tie rods. You DO NOT have to disassemble the tie rods to get the boots on. You can pop the tie rod off the steering knuckle and simply slide the boot over the tie rod end. I put a tiny bit of glycerin on the inside of the small end of the boot, worked the boot over the threaded stud of the tie rod and then over the entire tie rod end. It slipped on pretty easily really.

I had the tires off the car while working on the sway bar install. The whole job, including pulling the belly pan, separating the tie rods from the knuckles, installing the boots, the spring keepers, and reassembly took about 45 minutes. The drivers side was a bit fiddly because there isn't a lot of room with the master cylinder in the way.

Curious as to what everyone's favorite tool is for removing a tie rod end from the steering knuckle without damaging it.

I used a ball joint separator, it was like 20.00. You can also borrow one from AutoZone. It was so simple I felt like I was cheating.
