Thinking about replacing my stock horns with something like these (Hella T24):
https://www.amazon.de/HELLA-Frequenzbereich...urce=1&th=1 Various sites seem to indicate they will (physically) fit… They pull 72W each! So 12A total. The horn fuse is 16A, but it also runs the two 55W accessory driving lights in the bumper, which in my Euro spec car go on with the high beams. So imagine driving with the high beams on and having to honk… Only momentary, but that’s like a 21-22A draw thru that fuse. I guess in order to avoid this possibility, I am going to need an additional fuse and relay… Hmmm. |

I want to run trumpet horns.
I have vintage ones that have three trumpets and a pump so packaging is a real issue. In the past it was possible to have them play various tunes. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Attached thumbnail(s) |

Check Hella Supertones - depending on your reasons for replacing what you have.

I have the high and low air horn. Each mounted behind the turn signal buckets.
They really get other drivers attention |

Mostly I was interested in knowing if these things will actually fit in the same place as the OEM pancake horns - they being considerably thicker and the space behind the bumper being pretty limited.

I installed 96-97 VW Golf/Jetta high and low tone horns in my 914 in the stock two horn configuration locations. I used the factory female plugs from the golf/jetta and put spade connectors on the ends of the pigtail ends to connect to the factory locations in the 914 harness and the factory golf/jetta metal brackets. They sound amazing too. |

So I finally installed a set of Hella Twin Tone horns. They do fit in the space but there was a bit of work to do. The instructions that came with them said to absolutely not touch the nut that mounts the bracket to the horn or the sound might be affected. So I carefully bent the brackets and made standoffs to re-orient the horn so it would fit behind the grille.
They definitely sound great - no longer a "beep" and much more like a "honk". Still does not quite rival the horns on my '57 T-Bird - one thing I can say about her is she has great honkers! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) I don't know what the original horns for a 914 were like - the ones I took off the car look too new to be original - and they are both the same tone. |
