Installed one this spring before driving season started. All went well. I went to drive the car yesterday and I can’t engage 1,3,5 gears and went back and looked at the instructions. Says to grind the coupler. Ugh that’s an NOS one but ok did that. Better but where it needs to be. So now do I machine the bushing thinner? Give up on the bushing and go back to stock? Any ideas?

Do you have the round side of the bushing towards the firewall?

Is the coupler actually hitting the bushing?

If not then adjustment at the shifter itself.

Has your rear shift rod been bent? This will effectively change its length which will not allow for proper adjustment.


This is one of my most recommended upgrade parts despite requiring holes to be drilled which for most mods I am against, but in this case the results are worth it. Install them on just about every customer car and absolutely on every side shift conversion car as the available conversion bushings are to soft.

Yes installed correctly, shifter adjusted correctly, shift rod is perfect I have a fixture and make them regularly for the 914-6 conversion folks. The only change is the bushing from stock bushing which I ran previously. This was straight up winter maintenance no other changes. The only thing I can think of is that the firewall if when I installed it all those years ago if I pushed it back let’s say .100 of an inch then this would be the exact problem/situation. Only guessing on that part.

Wait, not sure I'm clear here. From your last post it sounds like the tangerine bushing was working and now is not?

I had a similar issue, as I recall, when I installed mine about 7 or 8 years ago. Before grinding anymore, take a look again at what James is describing. There's the bushing itself but also the spherical ball, IIRC. If that's oriented incorrectly interference can occur and that's what happened to me. I think I ended up grinding the coupler a fair amount before I realized that. It's been working fine ever since.

The other thing Chris suggested was possibly having to shift the motor back slightly. So if all else fails you can try that.

Could it be that the front shift rod has slipped in the coupler under the gear shift lever? Since you're missing all of the aft-pointing gears, that would seem to be a possibility.

Also look under the back of the car while someone moves the gear shift lever through the gears you can get. See if there's anything bumping into anything else, like the rear shift rod hitting the engine mount bar or some such.

Problem solved. The bushing was installed correctly but was just too thick. Removed .100” of an inch and all set. Works good now. Thanks everyone

I am not sure how to really explain it with more detail. Basically it’s about .575” thick so I brought it down to .475” and all works now. Attached Image

For sure one of best bang for your buck improvements you can do to the car.

but

Add the Tangerine rear shift rod and a Jwest shifter, it gets even better.

Hmmm…I have yet to install the Tangerine firewall bushing. I do have Rennshifter and the Tangerine shit rod upgrade.
Is there something I need to double check before having the bushing installed ????

It seems to be due to the hand made nature of these cars. I think Chris mentions that if contact occurs you can do grinding or try to move the engine back a bit. He shoots for the middle ground and once in a while the extremes show up and cause issues. PMB installs these all the time as well. I bet some work and some need fussing with.
