I am revamping an half of an old loafing barn into a body shop for an excuse to love what I do instead of a dreaded job. Anyhow we are taking the stalls out and pouring concrete and adding heat, insultion, lights etc. But the ceiling is somewhat irregular. As a result I will have to custom build my spray booth out of plywood...or? I would like it to be a cross draft booth. The foot print will be 20 buy 30 feet. So far I have 3 914s and a bug that will need to be painted. I am looking for ideas from any one who has built a permanent booth, from air extraction fans, filtration, heat,to doors etc... looking for ideas.

I'd do the MB911 route initially.

Then I'd watch for a real stand-alone paint booth from a body shop that went bankrupt.

They have an extremely small buyer pool, and you can buy used ones for pennies on a dollar.

I've seen 3 for sale, all at times I didn't have a place for them. The cheapest was "haul it off for free" and the most expensive was a nice used 25K booth for 5K.

If you only have a few cars to paint befriending a body shop is not a bad idea either.

Sometimes you can "rent" the booth over the weekend...

Lots of good videos on making your own cheapy MB911 style booths.

On materials for a home built. The inner surface needs to be "tile board" Masonite (white).

An animal barn might be challenging. Dust IS you enemy.

I want an in-ground center post lift in my ultimate paint booth...

I've "made friends" with a really good paint shop (I do all of their AC work) and I'd bet I could rent their booth for short periods of time.

Only problem is the owner Wrangler is the best shooter I've ever met, and I'd prefer he lays the paint down anyway...

Those are BAD ASSED!

I wasn't aware of those.

Look at the bottom of that link!

They have a bigger one for $500 and that's what I WILL buy next time I need one!

Thanks @mb911 for that link!

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) This is probably what I'll be using. Might as well... I'm already in the backyard.

I was going to go with an inflatable booth, but in the end I decided to make my own. I enclosed a section of the lean-to on the side of my shop with plastic and put an exhaust fan at one end and a wall of hvac filters at the other. It worked great and ran me about $300.

if you haven't put concrete in I would think about in-floor with pex and a water heater.

and if you havent insulated think about foam.

Dirt in a paint job comes from the compressed air, the painter, the object being painted and the enviornment in that order

Nice job! To keep the dust down, spray the floor with water.

You'll spend way more building one. Those inflatable ones will work until you figure out if you can make any money painting cars.

Might want to consider a fresh air system for the painter

New paints cause permanent damage when you breath them

For that reason I painted a few cars outdoors

You really don’t want to be in a sealed room breathing isocynates

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) A fresh air system is relatively cheap health insurance..
