My sweet 914 started me on the love of restoring old Porsches. And collecting trans-axle ones in mint condition. Ever since I restored a 1980 924 Turbo, I've longed for a 944 Turbo. But every one I looked at for the last 4 years led me to a "no way", "ain't happening". I gave up hoping and looking.

But Rick B (almost Concours '72 914, '68 912, '79 Concours 911 SC) didn't quit looking and found an incredible 951 for sale by its original owner who picked it up ant the factory with the Tourist Package, drove it over Europe, then had it shipped home.

An aerospace engineer, he took meticulous car of it for 38 years, changing the Movil 1 oil every 3k miles, recording every gallon of gas he put in it, and all its maintenance. He loved it so much he bought an identical twin - to race. His 951 race car is now on PCA Mart for sale too.

Friends checked the car out & assured me it was a good buy. And the seller gave me a huge discount. Yesteray I flew to Ohio and drove it home. The car did the 500 miles home like a new car would, and the owner assured me that it would do. He told me he'd pick me up if it failed in the first half of the trip home. Nary a glitch.

The Fuch's were unique to the '86 and never offered before or after. Owner installed a larger Andial turbo about 2 years after he bought it. I love the color and the wheels - car is a knock-out. Engine starts on 1st rev and purrs silky smooth.

Only shock driving home was to find the car is like new, 104k miles on it. Every thing works like new. Cruise control was a blessing.

Never known a 30 year old car to have a tranny that shifts & feels like new - this one does.

Most of the car looks new. Mechanically is operates like new.

Just wanted to share my joy with all here who helped me get started. I think this is likely the last of my old Porsches, my 4th. I have a "poor man's" collection, but oh what a collection I have! Each one worth much more than I have in them. All run like new. i am a blessed man indeed.

Love it.
I've had 86 and 89 944 Turbos and I MISS that 89. So smooth. Ran like a Swiss watch. Great cars with loooong legs.

Thanks! And thanks to all for the kind thoughts!

No way I'd put another engine in this car! So rare it must be left as is for life. Andial turbo probably puts hp at 240 which is more than enough for me.

I've driven a number of 951's in last 4 years, including an '88 S, but this is the best of all except for Bates McLain's that is for sale on PCA Mart. His too like new, but like this color and wheels a lot better than his. I wanted his but was way out of my price range.

This one below my budget by a couple grand!

"MORE BETTER"!

And I just drove this one 500+ miles from Ohio......and I'm used to my sweet '87 944 S - but this suspension is a bit tighter........

Lastly - my drive is 1/2 mile gravel road - so black just doesn't work for me, as beautiful as it is. And I love uncommon colors......

My new-to-me '92 968 has become my daily driver. It is such a great driving car that if forced to give up a car...well, at least I'd still have the 914 historics racer.

Unlike your experience, mine was to find a good project donor and bring it back; it dropped in my lap from a fellow racer who was going to use it for spares for his race car. Not the M030 package but a PO added the brakes and Koni suspension from the M030, and it has the RSBarn ECU chip and intake mods. All I had to add was some luvvin': t-belt and chain, all services, repairs of some hacked wiring (and ABS, speedo, and cruise), brakes, tires, new BT radio. Inerior is thankfully in great shape, but she does need a repaint...

Now any time I need to do an errand, the 968 gets the pick instead of the GTI or the 914. But winter's 'comin' to Connecticut eventually, so the the two Porsches will get pickled and their cousin will take over daily duties.

These transaxle cars are fantastic. - GA

If I ever sell my 944 S - it will be to find a sweet 968! The ultimate trans-axle car!

Nice for sure, just not my cup of tea. I love as original as possible.

Friend here had the most amazing LS in his 914 and I would give the build a 100 on a 100 point scale - aircraft quality.

He sold it a couple years ago for $25k. A steal, but not my cup of tea.
